Assignment 5A – Identifying Local Opportunities

1. "New Year's rescue: Tampa officers pull woman from submerged car" by Gainesville Sun

A woman was pulled by Florida sheriff's dive team to safety after she and her vehicle wound up upside down in a muddy ravine.

But the reason why she dropped in the ravine was that another driver cut her off on the road.

Problem: People need to be more careful while they are driving. Their driving awareness needs to be improved. I think one way to improve this is to make drivers license's test more difficult.

People: Drivers.

2. “GPD: Man, 42, charged in 2016 sexual battery” by Gainesville Sun

A Gainesville man was arrested because of sexual battery to a 14-year-old girl in July 2016. The victim girl told her aunt about the battery a couple of months after it happened.

Problem: The sexual battery and sexual assault happen everywhere in the world. Some victims don't know what to do and even choose to keep silent. We need more early sex education for kids about how to protect themselves.

People: Victims of the sexual battery or sexual assault.

3. “Gainesville votes to ban plastic bags, Styrofoam” by Gainesville Sun

People in Gainesville plan to ban plastic bags and Styrofoam containers. The purpose is to keep additional waste from the environment. However, the decision didn't come easy, not only because of the obstruction from the people who earn profits from these bags and containers but also because of the violation of the state law.

Problem: Plastic bags and Polystyrene containers are already proved to be harmful to the environment.  We can find those things pollute the river and ocean on websites.

People: Consumers and retailers of plastic bags and Styrofoam containers.

4. "Like to smoke on the beach? It could be illegal soon" by Gainesville Sun

Republican Sen. Joe Gruters filed a proposal to ban smoking on public beaches.

Problem: Smoking on public beaches is impolite to those who don't smoke or people who dislike the smell of the smoke. Because beaches are always crowded, and the smell of smoke can easily diffuse.

People: People who don't want to smell smoke on public beaches.

5. "Woman in viral protest video fired as state explores charging boyfriend with hate crime" by Miami Herald, the (FL)

A group of teenagers took part in a protest known as "Bikes Up Guns Down" to protest a lack of affordable housing in Liberty City. Scalione, who was a real estate employee, and her boyfriend yelled at those teens with racial slurs. The teens also shouted back with some racial slurs. Finally, Scalione was fired because of her discrimination.

Problem: Discrimination always exists. Although some people hide their discrimination in ordinary life, in some specific situation like dispute, it comes out unconsciously.

People:  People who have discrimination against another sex, race, age or religion.

  1. Hi Yida,

I really enjoyed reading your post about local opportunities. The article I found most interesting in your post was the one from Gainesville Sun about the potential ban on plastic bags and styrofoam. This could have an enormous impact on businesses in Gainesville and the surrounding region. Many businesses may have to scramble to figure out what they will do with the products that they sell that use these materials. This could have a huge economic impact!
